I know this is completely off-topic (sorry), but I'm reading The Master and Margarita by Boelkagov at the moment and I was wondering whether you read it and what your opinion of it was (I love it and am flying through it, which I hadn't expected).
Are you kidding? The Master and Margarita is one of my all time favourites! It was actually a toss-up between that and Oblomov as to what one I'd do a group-read for on my Substack. I'm sure I'll do The Master and Margarita at some point as I have a new translation of it that I've never read (O'Connor and Burgin). Glad to hear you're enjoying to so much! Which translation are you reading? Are you reading it in English?
I read a book last year that reminded me of it in quite a big way: Jonathan Strange and Mr Norrell by Susanna Clark. Might be one for you to take a look at and maybe add to your list.
I'm reading The M & M in Dutch, though if I'd ever want to reread it, I'd probably try an English translation. Which one would you say is best? The book was recommended to me years ago, by a stranger I met at a party (did he smell vaguely of sulphur?), and I bought it straightaway and never got around to reading it. And then last week, all of a sudden, I felt I wanted to dive into it.
And yes, Jonathan Strange, wonderful! I even bought the book twice, because I lent my copy to someone who never returned it and I wanted to reread it.
The only translation of M&M I've read is Michael Glenny's and I liked it fine. I'm keen to compare, but it probably won't be this year as my TBR is kinda loaded up. I'm not sure if I'll do another read-along this year, but if I do it will probably be Bulgakov's White Guard, as that's been on my TBR for years and I've just got a new translation (Roger Cockrell).
