I love Greenwitch, mostly because Jane gets to have a bigger role, but Grey King has dogs so <3
I read Silo recently (I haven't seen the TV show), and I found it rather odd. It didn't seem like a book for children at all. So much time and energy is invested in the characters at the beginning (the Mayor and Deputy Sheriff) that when they died I found myself pretty much mourning them for the rest of the story and frustrated that no one could revenge them/bring their murderer to justice. Maybe this is the point Howey was trying to make: move on, and justice will find its own way. I am not a mover on. I am a holder on.
Oh, I love The Dark Is Rising! (Though Greenwitch is my least favorite. I'm not a fan of the full-on paganism.) But I do love this series! I have fond memories of reading as a child, in deep Chicago winter, sitting in front of our heater. I reread it every few years. It makes me happy to see someone else enjoying it!
I'm looking forward to reading Silver on the Tree soon! I also read it as a kid but remember nothing other than the winter vibes in The Dark is Rising.
January has been fascinating—you've read so much. I want to read the books behind the Silo series too. My relationship with it is complicated: while I love the concept and setting, the characters leave me cold, and I often don't understand some of their motivations. I had hoped for more mystical elements in the show. Perhaps the books will offer what the screen adaptation lacked.
And it's interesting that they will be reading Le Guin. I only recently learned about this book and that it was inspired by Dostoevsky's Demons/Possessed. So I might join in, but I'm afraid I won't have time...
The first Silo book was decent, but the second was a bit slow and boring to be honest. Now I know what brought about the silos, I’m not that excited to continue with the third book. Although the completist in me wants to keep going. I love Rebecca Ferguson’s portrayal of the main character in the show. The next season looks like it’s going to cover book two, so it’ll be very different.
