I remember the Russian students who started to arrive when I was teaching English in London shortly after the collapse of the USSR and some of their rather hair-raising experiences of life in Russia at that time.
You might be interested in the work of my old friend James Rodgers, who teaches on the journalism courses at City University in London. He used to work as a correspondent in Moscow, during the Yeltsin years and the Chechen wars. He's written a number of books about reporting in Russia and is particularly interested in the connections between history and current politics in Russia (and how Putin uses that connection). His latest is called The Return of Russia: from Yeltsin to Putin, the story of a vengeful Kremlin.

I went to Daunt Books but they didn’t have Rodger’s book. The Russia section was amazing though!
