Description: Shy and retiring, never one for conversations or the whys or wherefores of life. She was a rather plump woman of about forty, with black eyes and eyebrows, good-natured, like many large, idle women, even very pretty, and ridiculously bashful.

She explained that she wanted Raskolnikov out because he no longer had work, he’d quit school and, with the death or her daughter, the marriage promise was now null and void.
