Historathon is a book event started by Vin on Revenant Reads, a YouTube channel in the book space (or BookTube channel). I found it late in 2024 and read a few history books that I was planning on reading anyway; it was nice to get to chat with some other history readers in the Discord server and start following their BookTube channels. My main area of historical interest is Russia, having studied a degree in Russian language and literature and lived in several former Soviet countries, including Russia herself.
I had a challenge picking a book for Q1 of Historathon2025, covering the period 0–500 A.D. Over the Christmas break, I heard Tom Holland on Bari Weiss’s Honestly podcast, discussing the history of Christianity. I learned that he had written a book on this topic, and the podcast discussion piqued my interest enough that it was an easy choice for me to make for my first Historathon book.
I’m reading it over the full three months of the quarter, which works out at just six pages a day. I’m not quite sure what form my notes will take or what kind of content I’ll put on the back of it, but I’ve learned over my first year as a bookish content creator that reading in a group is way more rewarding and enriching than reading on one’s own, so if you would like to join me in reading this book, you can do so by following me here on this Substack, watching my BookTube channel or following the reading group on Fable (a mobile book-tracking app designed for book groups).
And if you’d like to join the Historathon Discord server, there’s a link in Vin’s Historathon 2025 announcement video.
If you’ve decided you’d like to join and want to help out my channel, please use this affiliate link to buy the book. The Amazon link is localised to your region if possible; the Waterstones and Blackwells links are both UK-specific.
