Just want to say thanks Cams for the listening and reading options. Last week I read it offline and this week I listened while on a long drive. Enjoyed both ways immensely. And also, Chapter 3 has me hooked. I did not want to stop reading!
One thing I've noticed in Russian literature is how often sisters sacrifice everything for their brothers, while the brothers seem remarkably irresponsible. Is this reflecting social reality at the time, or is it mainly a literary motif?
Or am I noticing it more than I should because it tends to annoy me?
I hadn’t picked up on that. I acknowledge it’s possibly a blind spot. I have two women in my Discord reading War and Peace with Simon and they’ve both commented on some ‘issues’. It’s always good to have these pointers.

Indeed. Thank you Cams. I went down a bit of rabbit hole wondering just how cold was it in early 20th century Moscow? The references in the book to frozen ears and furs that weren’t dense enough got me to wondering. Apparently, the weather was harsher then with common overnight lows 2 to 9F and highs in the 15 to 20F range. Record lows were around -38F.
